Vendor Endorsement

An insurance policy modification that extends coverage to protect a vendor's financial interest in property they don't own but have sold, leased, or provided services for. This endorsement protects vendors from losses when customers' insurance is inadequate or disputed.

Example

The equipment leasing company required a vendor endorsement on the renter's insurance policy to protect their ownership interest in the expensive machinery.

Memory Tip

Vendor Endorsement = Vendor gets ENDORsed (added) to someone else's policy to protect their financial interest - like getting your name on someone else's insurance.

Why It Matters

Vendor endorsements protect businesses from financial losses when their customers' insurance is insufficient, disputed, or cancelled. Without this protection, vendors could face significant losses if customer property is damaged and the customer's insurance doesn't fully cover the vendor's financial interest.

Common Misconception

Many vendors think that requiring customers to carry insurance automatically protects them, but customer insurance primarily protects the customer's interests. A vendor endorsement is specifically needed to protect the vendor's separate financial interests, and it doesn't automatically make the vendor an additional insured for liability purposes.

In Practice

ABC Equipment Leasing rents a $50,000 excavator to a construction company for six months. The construction company's insurance policy includes a vendor endorsement naming ABC as a loss payee. When the excavator is stolen from the job site, the construction company's insurer pays the claim directly to ABC Equipment Leasing to cover their ownership interest, even though the construction company had financial difficulties and might not have otherwise ensured ABC was compensated.

Etymology

The term developed in commercial insurance as businesses needed protection when their customers' insurance might not adequately cover their financial interests in transactions or ongoing business relationships.
